Betting On Yourself: How E-Commerce Has Empowered and Liberated Workers

Advice for professionals ditching Corporate America for full-time ecommerce

If you’ve been paying attention over the last few years, you probably noticed a trend between workers and employers. It’s been appropriately named The Great Resignation and is largely driven by professionals quitting their day jobs in droves to start on themselves instead.

One of the main motivations behind workers quitting Corporate America is to regain control of their lives by  starting their own online businesses or passion projects.

But why is this happening?

With the current digital economy, workers have realized that both their earning potential and quality of life can improve when they take matters into their own hands.

So, if you’re considering joining the ranks of the 33 million Americans who have already taken part in the great resignation, we’ve got some practical advice to consider before doing so. We’ll also review some of the ways ecommerce is empowering and liberating workers and highlight key steps you should take before abandoning your job in Corporate America for full-time ecommerce.

1. Shift Your Mindset

We’ve found that ecommerce entrepreneurs typically fall into one of two categories:

First are the commerce entrepreneurs that are super conscientious. They plan for months or years before leaving their corporate jobs. They’re risk-averse, so they budget, hit all their financial goals, and make contingency plans in case they fail.

The second are those who shoot from the hip. They have a feeling about a business idea, and at the first indication of success they decide to go all in.

Regardless of the category you fall into, it’s important to shift your mindset as you move from a corporate environment to that of an ecommerce entrepreneur. Be prepared to live and transact in a less reliable world – especially at the beginning.

Your payouts may differ from month-to-month. Or you might make significantly less money for quite some time as you build your brand. That’s why acknowledging the need for a shift in mindset is important. It’s all about resetting your values and expectations while prioritizing only the things that bring you closer to your goals.

2. Find Meaning Where You Are Now

Many aspiring ecommerce entrepreneurs resent their day jobs because they don’t inspire a sense of meaning.

Sure,  working for a corporation can be limiting at times, but the truth is that it isn’t necessarily the job that gives meaning. Rather, it’s the attitude and output from which meaning is derived.

Knowing and being honest with yourself about this before you go into ecommerce full-time will spare you from disillusionment down the line.

While being your own boss is a great perk, it’s not enough in itself to give your work meaning.

The meaning you derive from your job will come from things like how your products are helping others or how your company gives back to the community.

3. Get Ready to Put in More Hours

Success in ecommerce doesn’t happen without sacrifice. You can kiss your 2 weeks paid vacation goodbye and get used to working around the clock for the foreseeable future as the average ecommerce startup requires tireless and thankless effort to get off the ground.

But if done correctly, it will be worth it in the long run.

4. Discipline is a Necessity

Discipline is akin to putting in more hours, but on a broader scale.

When you’re out on your own running an ecommerce business, the only person who’s going to hold you accountable is you. That’s why it’s important to maintain a high degree of self-discipline in your life.

You can begin practicing self-discipline to adopt an entrepreneur mentality long before you actually become an entrepreneur. Challenge yourself at your corporate job to work as if the stakes were so high that your personal, financial independence depended on your effort. This is the attitude you’ll need to bring with you when you finally jump ship and start your own venture.
